چکیده

With an eye to increased efficiency, agent communication language (ACL) designers have heeded the analogy with natural language and introduced elements from natural language pragmatics (NLP) into their designs. However, ACL pragmatics has not availed itself of NLP advances to the extent that it could. While a few aspects of pragmatics are incorporated, most notably speech acts, their inclusion ultimately results in a misrepresentation of what pragmatics is and what it can offer to agent communication. There have been positive steps in bringing pragmatics into the agent communication fold, such as work on conversation policies, but even these projects are relatively preliminary. Continued work in ACL pragmatics (ACLP) is hampered by the lack of systematicity in NLP, making it difficult to apply the analogy in a principled way. We develop an informal model of the structure of NLP that (a) systematizes the disparate topics in NLP, and (b) can serve as an interface connecting problems in ACLP with their counterparts in NLP.

“Agent A, Can You Pass the Salt?” The Role of Pragmatics in Agent Communication

Developers of current agent communication languages (ACLs) have exploited the parallels between agent communication and human communication in developing the syntax and semantics of their languages. In this paper we extend the comparison of agent communication language to natural language by proposing an ACL pragmatics. Just as in natural language, the pragmatics of an ACL is the relationship b...

Normative Pragmatics for Agent Communication Languages

The ability to communicate is one of the crucial properties of agents. In this paper a normative approach to the pragmatics of Agent Communication Languages (ACLs) is proposed. In an open environment, like the Internet, in which agents are designed in many different ways, it is important to clearly establish the meaning of a standard language for artificial agents. Traditionally, the pragmatics...

On Agent Programming Language Support for Rational Communication

Résumé : It is generally thought that agents in a multiagent system should be capable of communicating in a highlevel, speech acts-based, agent communication language (ACL), for instance FIPA ACL. Many agent programming languages (APLs) such as Jack, JASON, JADE, etc., support communication in such ACLs, i.e., the production and reception/processing of ACL messages. They also support the specif...

Semantics and Pragmatics for Agent Communication

For the successful management of interactions in open multiagent systems, a social framework is needed to complement a standard semantics and interaction protocols for agent communication. In this paper a rights-based framework in which interaction protocols and conversation policies acquire their meaning is presented. Rights improve interaction and facilitate social action in multi-agent domai...

Norms of Conversation in a Framework for Agent Communication Languages

In open and heterogeneous environments offered by the Internet, where agents are designed by different vendors, the development of standards for agent communication needs to keep abreast of new dynamic interaction modalities. The objective of this paper is to contribute to FIPA’s standardization effort by proposing a pragmatic approach to the design of agent communication languages (ACLs) in wh...
